A Staunton man and his dog were attacked early Thursday afternoon in the George Washington National Park after coming up on a mother black bear and her two cubs. The man and dog were able to escape to a nearby rural market where EMTs responded and transported the man to a hospital while his dog was taken in for veterinary care.

WHSV Tv-3 reported on the attack (see Staunton man and dog hospitalized after bear attack):

Steven Krichbaum, 59, of Staunton was visiting a section of the George Washington National Forest on the Hardy County, W.Va. side of Route 55.

As he and his dog were walking in the woods, they came upon a black bear and two cubs. The black bear attacked them and they were hurt as they attempted to fend off the attack.
