Dinner on the deck. That’s our big plans for this opening day of the weekend when just about everyone celebrates one last blast of summer before hunkering in for the school year. Pools will be busy, campgrounds will be full, and beach lovers will lap up the warmth of a these final days of August.
Us? We’re staying home or, as my daughter said, we’re enjoying a staycation. While everyone else is out there fighting the crowds, we’re going to enjoy the beauty of the mountains from our own deck. No traffic, no lines, no pressure. Perfect!
So we’ve begun our weekend with dinner on the deck. I cooked barbecued baby back ribs, fresh corn on the cob, and added a four-bean salad (out of a jar). Yeast rolls. Iced tea.
With a glass of Riesling and feet propped up, there is an absolutely wonderful breeze blowing the mid-70s temps around, leaves on the trees are rustling, and I’m watching butterflies — blue swallowtails — chase each other around the tree branches. A hummingbird landed on the branch where it preened a moment or two, then buzzed over to the petunias in flower boxes on the deck railing, not paying any attention to us.
This is about as perfect as I could hope for on a holiday weekend. At this rate, it’s going to be a fantastic time to do whatever we want for our staycation. Hope yours is fantastic, too!
