It’s September, apples are ripening on trees, and apple butter season is here which means it’s time to time for Skyland’s 15th Annual Apple Butter Celebration. In the cool of the mountains of Shenandoah National Park, the copper kettle will be filled with apples that will spend the day bubbling over an open fire, the paddle continually stirring to prevent sticking. You’re welcome to give it a stir and take a taste of this mountain treat. When the apples have cooked down and had spices added, it will be sealed in jars and sold.
Check out Skyland’s restaurant with the Shenandoah Valley view and taste some of the apple-inspired recipes: Grilled Chicken Breast with an Apple Salsa, Apple Smoked Barbecue, Granny Apple Cole Slaw, Cinnamon Glazed Apples, Apple Cobbler, Caramel Apples, and Hot & Cold Apple Cider. Horton wine and Old Hill Cider tastings will also take place.
Entertainment will be provided with Turkey Ridge String Band, 10 a.m.; Shenandoah Valley Cloggers, 11:45 a.m.; Debbie Zinn and Natural Grass, 1 p.m.; Orange Cloggers, 2:30 p.m.; and High Ground, 3:45 p.m. There will also be children’s crafts and pony rides for the kids.
It’s a day to remember on Skyline Drive.
