The holiday shopping season is here at Dayton Farmers Market located in the Mennonite community of Dayton, Virginia, northwest of Staunton. This group of shops has been a go-to mecca for years in the quest to find unique gifts anytime but at Christmas everything comes alive. Usually open only three days a week, they are now on holiday hours and open Tuesday through Saturday, 9-6, until Christmas (closed on Thanksgiving Day). Some days you may see an Old Order Mennonite horse and buggy tied to the hitching post. Sit at one of the tables near the entrance and people-watch while sipping a coffee or eating a barbecue from Hank’s.
On Tuesdays in November enter the drawing for a $50 Farmers Market gifts certificate. Wednesday in November will be tasting days at the various food shops.
Stop by the Kaffee Klatsch and choose from a wide variety of coffees but also season offerings like Aspen Mulled Cider and Pumpkin Spice Lattes.
The Cheese Place provides bulk goods including spices, candies, baking items plus they now have scone mixes that include gluten free chocolate chip and pumpkin cranberry as well as glazed cinnamon raisin and glazed maple oat.
Zolas is a niche florist who specializes in unique decorations for the holidays. She is offering 50% off a nice selection of stems, berries, garlands, and more.
Warfel’s Sweet Shoppe … yum. Some of the best homemade candies around. For the holiday season they are offering Harvest Chocolate — hazelnuts, almonds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds — all blended into dark or milk chocolate. Free tastes all weekend!
Taste of Virginia offers Virginia-made foods including local milk, butter, apple cider, and sorghum molasses.
The Pretzel Shop has what I consider to be the best big, soft pretzels anywhere, hands down. I used to like Auntie Anne’s pretzels but these are far better. They’re handmade fresh throughout the day.
