The back yard bird feeder is busy this morning as heavy snow falls in Augusta County. This cardinal was hunkered down on the picket fence as he faced into the wind and driving snow while waiting his turn at the smorgasbord.
With the temperature at 14 degrees and heavy snow coming in sideways on a southwest wind, a variety of birds are lined up in the the trees around the feeder waiting their turn for seeds, berries, and a suet cake.
We are under a Winter Storm Warning in the Shenandoah Valley with a forecast of 4-8″ of snow throughout the day. Late in the day snow is expected to turn into sleet and then freezing rain. Temperatures will remain below freezing on Saturday.
We have a number of cardinal couples who lives in the yard and frequent the bird bath and feeder. They are joined by juncos, tufted titmice, woodpeckers, blue jays, mockingbirds, sparrows, and many others.
