Hundreds of Donald Smith supporters turned out Tuesday night at the Verona Fire Department to enjoy a roast pig, tables full of homemade goodies, and to listen to election results. They weren’t disappointed. As soon as the numbers began rolling in for the four sheriff candidates, Smith led and never let up. As the night went on, excitement rose as a win was anticipated and finally realized.

When Smith, 31, was declared the winner, the air was electric as the capacity crowd cheered. A new shirt was donned by dozens — navy blue with the words, “There’s a new SHERIFF in town,” across the back.

Indeed.

Indeed.

Those hundreds of friends, neighbors, co-workers, and community leaders had been the driving force of the campaign from the beginning, going door-to-door, putting up hundreds of signs all over Augusta County, pushing out info on social media, and gathering more support from the community as the months rolled past.

When Smith had announced in April that he was running for sheriff, he declined to label himself as a Republican, Democrat, or Independent. Instead, he noted that he was running as an American because sheriff should not be political. “The enemy isn’t the opposing party,” he noted. “The enemy is the criminal. My desire is to be the people’s sheriff.”

A SWAT officer with the sheriff’s department and Augusta County native, he earned his criminal justice degree from Liberty University and Blue Ridge Community College.

Congratulations to Sheriff-elect Donald Smith and wishing him the best in his new job.
