The words in Dana Perino’s book that hurt

Dana Perino 1By Lynn R. Mitchell

I was at the 2008 Republican National Convention as a delegate. I kept asking why President George W. Bush was not on the program. We wanted to see him. I knew his poll numbers had dropped but we had all worked hard for him in 2000 and again in 2004, and he had been our leader during war time when terrorism had rocked us all into a new reality.

Now to read in former Bush press secretary Dana Perino’s new book that he was not even invited, and that he was hurt by that omission, hurts me. I hope the president knows that probably most of the delegates who were in Minneapolis-St. Paul wanted him there during that convention.

This is from Dana’s new book, “And the good news is … Lessons and Advice from the Bright Side:”

Bush was hurt about not being included in the 2008 Republican convention. As Perino explains it, they sensed that the McCain-Palin campaign “was stalling to make a decision until it was too late for us to leave in time.” Bush stayed at the White House to give a statement on Hurricane Gustav.

At the end of it, the President noticed the monitor showing the live shot of the convention floor.

He quietly asked, “Do you think they know they’re insulting me?”

I waited a beat, looking at the screen with him.

“Yes, sir. I believe they do.”

After all that man did during his eight years as president, to be snubbed by his own party is almost incomprehensible. I was then, and proudly remain now, a George W. Bush Republican.
