Chesterfield Republicans win big with 23 out of 24 elected offices

Chesterfield County Republican Committee 1By Lynn R. Mitchell

When Republicans achieve almost 100 percent success, that’s something to celebrate.

Members of the Chesterfield County Republican Committee (CCRC) are some of the most active in Virginia. When Terry McAuliffe declared he would win the Commonwealth for Hillary Clinton in 2016, CCRC decided to put a few road blocks in the way. As a result, they ended up painting the county deep Republican red by winning 23 of 24 offices, ranking Chesterfield as one of the most Republican locations in Virginia.

Not bad for a group of dedicated volunteers who started the 2015 campaign season by holding regular Sunday night coordination meetings, beginning in the spring, that brought together campaigns, candidates, and leaders.

Propelling election day with state senate candidate Glen Sturtevant, the Republican winners included all five school board seats, four of five supervisors, all Constitutional officers, five House of Delegate positions, two state senators — heck, they even won both Soil and Water Directors. In January when everyone takes office, all but one local elected official in Chesterfield will be Republican.

The appearance of keynote speaker Donald Trump, who has announced an interest in seeking the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, is sure to make this a popular and in-demand event.

The dinner will be held at The Country Club at the Highlands in Chesterfield on Friday, April 24. A cash bar cocktail reception will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a silent auction followed by dinner and Mr. Trump’s address. Tickets are $100 per person with sponsorships available.

It should be an exciting evening.

Mike Thomas responds to baseless claims by blogger

In case you missed this Saturday post….

By Lynn R. Mitchell

Republican Party of Virginia First Vice Chairman Michael Thomas responded to the latest click bait rambling attack of blogger Tom White and his baseless accusations on Donald Williams, the Chesterfield County Republican Committee, the Hanover County Republican Committee, and by extension, the Republican Party of Virginia. Mr. Thomas wrote:

Dear Tom:

I believe you are way off base with your attacks on Donald Williams and the Chesterfield County Republican Committee. There are no requirements for RPV or any local committee to allow audio or video recording of meetings. None. Not in IRS regs, not in federal or State code, not in the RPV Party Plan.

In fact, the RPV General Counsel provided guidance in 2008 that committees MAY adopt restrictions – or even a prohibition – on recordings. Quite a number of committees have such a policy, including the Chesterfield County Republican Committee, which adopted one…

More than five years ago.

John Watkins

Sen. John Watkins

By Lynn R. Mitchell

State Senator John Watkins’ announcement to not seek re-election in 2015 caught many by surprise. After all, this  long-time legislator had represented Powhatan, Chesterfield, and Colonial Heights citizens in the Virginia legislature since 1981, first as a delegate and later as state senator.

Linwood Cobb, 7th Congressional District chairman, at Saturday’s Chesterfield County Republican Committee Lincoln-Reagan dinner and U.S. Senate candidates forum.

Linwood has done an extraordinary job as chairman of the district that is represented by Congressman Eric Cantor who is now the U.S. House Majority Leader. Together, they have worked to build the party by bringing in voters with events like the annual Republican Roundup held each fall and the annual Eric Cantor breakfast that hosted 1,200 people this year.

We need Linwood’s leadership to continue as chairman when the 7th Congressional District convention is held this Saturday.
