Augusta County Library trustees elect new officers

??????????By Kurt Michael

Thursday during its July meeting, the Augusta County Board of Trustees met with director Diantha McCauley to elect officers for the 2014-15 year and welcome a new member to the board. In their tradition of rotating among the various branches, this month the meeting took place at the Churchville branch.

Susan Thacker, Middle River District representative, was elected president and Lynn Mitchell, Pastures District representative, was elected vice-president. Trustees welcomed a new member, Carol Anne Turrentine, representing Riverheads District. Last meeting we welcomed Doran Stegura of South River District after the death of long-time trustee Terry Sumey.

ICYMI: Photos from ‘Burgers with Bill’

??????????By Lynn R. Mitchell

For 20 years, Bill Bolling — former Virginia Lieutenant Governor, state Senator, and Hanover County supervisor — has gathered with friends and supporters in June near the date of his birthday on the 15th for Burgers with Bill, a casual cookout fundraiser. This year was the 20th anniversary of that event and it was an invitation-only evening in Richmond, compliments of Bolling’s Mainstream Virginia Project. With temperatures soaring into the 90s, it was literally the hottest ticket in town with hundreds in attendance.

Photos #1 – Burgers with Bill … Bolling, Romney, Gillespie, McDonnell joined by 400 guests

??????????The 20th Annual “Burgers with Bill” was a highlight event Tuesday at Innsbrook on the western edges of Richmond with more than 400 friends and allies attending as guests of former Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling and his wife Jean Ann. The Bollings continued the event this year as an appreciation dinner for those who have traveled the journey with them through 22 years of elected office. The LG was joined by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ed Gillespie and Governor Mitt Romney who was the GOP U.S. Presidential nominee in 2012 and remains extremely popular with Republicans nationwide. (See Burgers with Bill tonight … hottest ticket in UVA headlining Bill Bolling, Mitt Romney, Ed Gillespie.)

??????????“Mitt Romney. Go, Ed!”
Governor Romney signed the bus, a tradition with the Gillespie campaign at events throughout the Commonwealth. Others in the crowd signed, too, finding room among other familiar Republican signatures.

Democrats help tea party take down Eric Cantor

By Lynn R. Mitchell

It has been a lingering question some have asked for a couple of years: could the Democrats have infiltrated the tea party and libertarian ranks to drive the internal takeover of the Republican Party and defeat Republican elected officials?

An interesting article in Friday’s Washington Post (see I’m a Democrat and I helped the tea party unseat Eric Cantor) seems to confirm those suspicions.  Democrat Brian Umana wrote:

The truth is that Cantor’s electoral demise did not occur overnight. It was the culmination of more than four years of grass-roots organizing, from both the right and the left, to unseat him. Behind the scenes, Cantor opponents who otherwise had little ideological common ground cooperated in his demise. I know, because I helped engineer it.

The imminent danger of paper airplanes and GOP conventions

By Kurt Michael

Sometimes in life we take ourselves too seriously. No one knew this better than President Ronald Reagan who poked fun of himself and others in many of his speeches. Reagan’s humor was never mean-spirited and was a welcomed relief during stressful times. With that said, I appreciate the graphic printed at the bottom of this year’s 2014 Republican State Convention Program.

As the story goes, at last year’s convention in Richmond, many of the delegates were chastised for throwing paper airplanes. They were told that the paper planes, with their sharp noses, could hit the projector screen and cause damage.

Red vs Blu: The Lit Drop

About Red vs Blu Comic: The comic strip Red vs Blu, found only on LynnRMitchell.com, is a take-off of the classic 1961 comic strip in Mad Magazine, Spy vs Spy: “The comic strip always featured two spies who are completely identical save for the fact that one is dressed in white and the other black. The pair are constantly warring with each other, using a variety of booby-traps to inflict harm on the other. The spies usually alternate between victory and defeat with each new strip.” Red vs Blu follows the same genre.
