Random acts of kindness … the patriotic friendship quilt

??????????There was an unexpected box under the Christmas tree this year that, I was surprised to learn, was for me. It was Christmas Day and we had finished opening gifts when my mom reached over for one leftover gift and handed it to me. As we sat in my living room, I opened it while all eyes were on me — my parents, husband, children, sister, brother-in-law, and niece. Mom was all mysterious and mum, so we wondered what it was and where it had come from. She wasn’t saying … just sat there with a big cat-that-swallowed-the-canary grin on her face. I excitedly ripped off the paper to find a fairly large brown box that I quickly opened.

‘Spiraling into WICKEDness’

What do you get when you cross a challenge from the hand-dyed fabric company Cherrywood Fabrics with more than a hundred of the best quilters that America has to offer including our daughter’s mother-in-law? It becomes the inspiration for the WICKED Cherrywood Challenge and draws in the most creative, original, hand-crafted WICKED swag seen anywhere, all in celebration of┬áthe 15th anniversary of the wildly popular musical, WICKED: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz.

The challenge was to make a 20-inch square quilt from the WICKED theme, incorporating Cherrywood’s green and back hand-dyed fabrics while allowing additional colors of the same fabric. The response from quilting artists was so overwhelming that the original plan to choose 20 quilts to hang in Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre in New York City, home of WICKED, resulted in the decision to choose 27 quilts.

Of those 27, only nine — shown above — were selected to travel with the WICKED tour company around the country. One of those nine — the quilt in the upper right corner — was crafted by Vickie Meredith Lord of Atlanta — master quilter, beach lover, and mom to our son-in-law.
