Virginia late autumn woods … the road home to the Shenandoah Valley


We took the back road home to Staunton from Richmond after the long Thanksgiving weekend, enjoying the late autumn leaves and winter woods along Rt. 250. A late-morning start had us ahead of expected heavy traffic as students returned to western Virginia universities and travelers began their journey home.

Tastee Freez in Churchville robbed by armed gunman

Augusta County law enforcement reported a man armed with a gun and knife robbed the Churchville Tastee Freez late Friday night, according to reporter Brad Zinn at the Staunton News Leader (see Tastee Freez robbed in Churchville). The ice cream eatery, located in Augusta County west of Staunton at the intersection of Rt. 250 and Rt. 42, is popular with locals as well as tourists who travel that route to campgrounds and hiking trails in the nearby mountains.

No further details were available early Saturday morning.

The Popcorn Man victorious with Augusta County Board of Zoning Appeals

It was the last item on Thursday’s agenda at the Augusta County Board of Zoning Appeals meeting. Everyone else left so only supporters of Ronald King were left to address the board toward the end of the public hearing. Mr. King, owner of King’s Gourmet Popcorn on Afton Mountain, was questioned by the board and then two members of the public spoke on his behalf.

It was officially listed on the agenda:

A request by Ronald King, for a Special Use Permit to have outdoor storage and display in conjunction with a food service vehicle on property owned by Skyline Swannanoa, Inc., located at 5186 Howardsville Turnpike, Afton, in the South River District.

In lay language, he needed a special use permit to remain in operation in addition to his business license and health department clearance.
