Was this a sun dog in late afternoon sky?

By Lynn R. Mitchell

??????????Just after 5:30 Monday afternoon this glow was visible in the southwestern sky over the Appalachian Mountains in western Augusta County. Was it a sun dog?

The definition of a sun dog given by Wikipedia says, “Sun dogs are a member of a large family of halos, created by light interacting with ice crystals in the atmosphere. Sun dogs typically appear as two subtly colored patches of light to the left and right of the Sun, approximately 22° distant and at the same elevation above the horizon as the Sun.

Update: Meteorologist son-in-law said yes, it was a sun dog.

December Appalachian sunset

??????????December sunset over Elliott’s Knob and North Mountain in the Appalachian Mountains. By the time I retrieved my camera, it was beyond the moment when the sky was at its most brilliant. It still was stunning.
