7th Annual Salisbury Turkey Waddle

??????????By Lynn R. Mitchell

It was a wet race this year in Salisbury subdivision in Midlothian for neighbors who participated in the 7th Annual Turkey Waddle, a 5K course held on Thanksgiving Day through the neighborhood beginning at Salisbury Presbyterian Church. A shorter, two-mile route is popular with parents with small kids or babies in strollers, grandparents, and those walking dogs. The begin at the church on Salisbury Road, then down Starcross, onto Kingslynn, and right onto Kingsmill Road and back to Salisbury Road and the church. Last year there were 900 runners who ended the race with hot chocolate and cookies to start their Thanksgiving Day.

“I appreciate you joining me to give this turkey a presidential pardon,” said the President in his remarks. “Stars is a very special bird with a very special name. Do you want to build a snow turkey?

snowflakes_2By Lynn R. Mitchell

With the wintry forecast for the Shenandoah Valley on Thanksgiving Eve, the song, “Do You Want To Build a Snowman?” from the movie Frozen keeps swirling around in my head with, of course, a slight variation in lyrics. Looking at WxRisk’s forecast Tuesday morning as well as other national forecasts, the intense part of the storm seems to be migrating further north but anything can happen between now and then.

Check local stations WHSV TV-3 (Harrisonburg) and NBC-29 (Charlottesville) for updated forecasts.

Amish horse and buggyBy Lynn R. Mitchell

The holiday shopping season is here at Dayton Farmers Market located in the Mennonite community of Dayton, Virginia, northwest of Staunton. This group of shops has been a go-to mecca for years in the quest to find unique gifts anytime but at Christmas everything comes alive. Usually open only three days a week, they are now on holiday hours and open Tuesday through Saturday, 9-6, until Christmas (closed on Thanksgiving Day). Some days you may see an Old Order Mennonite horse and buggy tied to the hitching post. Sit at one of the tables near the entrance and people-watch while sipping a coffee or eating a barbecue from Hank’s.
