There’s nothing like a big red apple sign to entice travelers to stop at a roadside stand in the fall for apples and mums. That’s exactly what happened as my sister and I traveled the back roads of Shenandoah County this week, meandering where the wind took us and making discoveries along the way.
Along Rt. 42 was Paugh’s Orchard stand where the apples were fresh off the trees — Gala and Golden Delicious — and the prices were right. A friendly gentleman provided peck-sized plastic bags and told us to stuff them to the brim, as many as we could possible cram into the bag, and to feel free to mix the two varieties.
Armed with mums, apples, jellies, jams, birdseed wreath, and more, we said good-bye and resumed our travels along the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
From the Paugh’s Orchard website:

Nestled along a bend in scenic Rt. 42, Paugh’s Orchard offers a large variety of produce and products that are sold in the roadside fruit stand on the farm.
We offer several varieties of apples and peaches as well as strawberries, blackberries, fresh garden vegetables, pumpkins and gourds, jams, jellies, honey and much more. Our fruits, vegetables, potted plants are available seasonally.
